Keep unopened cans in a cool, dry pantry indefinitely. Once opened, transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate. Freeze in ice cube trays or freezer bags for longer storage.
Cooking Tips
Not all canned pumpkin is pure puree—check the label. 'Pumpkin pie filling' contains added sugar and spices; use plain 'pumpkin puree' for savory dishes.
Use in soups, curries, oatmeal, pancakes, muffins, and pie.
A standard 15 oz can holds about 1¾ cups of puree.
Roasted fresh pumpkin can be substituted 1:1 if you want homemade flavor.
Common Mistakes
Confusing pumpkin puree with pumpkin pie filling—they are not interchangeable in all recipes.
Draining canned puree unnecessarily; the liquid is part of the product and adds moisture to baking.
Storing opened cans in the refrigerator without transferring to a container—this encourages rust and contamination.
